how to replace frayed power cord on Oreck vacuum cleaner?

  • Unplug the vacuum cleaner's power plug from the wall outlet. Press the button on the top front of the plastic collection cover. Lift the cover off the front of the vacuum cleaner and place it aside.

  • Trace the power cord to where it enters the back bottom of the vacuum cleaner. Remove the screws from the panel surrounding the power cord with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the panel. Aim the beam of a flashlight inside the compartment so that you can see where the wires at the end of the power cord wrap around two screws on the motor assembly. Loosen these screws with a Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.

  • Pull the power cord out of the compartment and dispose of it properly. Strip a 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the two wires of the replacement power cord. Run the wires into the compartment along the path of the original power cord--pushing the wires into the grooves inside the compartment.

  • Tie a knot on the cord on the inside of the compartment to prevent the cord from being pulled out.

  • Wrap the exposed end of each wire of the power cord around the loosened screws. Tighten the screws. Replace the panel and reattach the screws. Stand the vacuum cleaner right side up. Place the bottom of the plastic collection cover into the bottom front slot on the vacuum cleaner. Push the cover back on the front of the vacuum cleaner.

  • A frayed power plug is a hazard, with a risk of a fire or electric shock if loose wires convey electricity to the cord's sheathing.
