How to remove A/C Compressor on GMC S15 truck.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTION
Please refer toChapter 1before discharging the compressor or disconnecting air conditioning lines. Damage to the air conditioning system or personal injury could result. Consult your local laws concerning refrigerant discharge and recycling. In many areas it may be illegal for anyone but a certified technician to service the A/C system. Always use an approved recovery station when discharging the air conditioning.

Except MFI-Turbo
  1. Either discharge the refrigerant into a suitable recovery system (if available) or have the system discharged by a professional shop.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then disengage the compressor wiring.
  3. Release the belt tension and remove the drive belt from the compressor pulley.
  4. If necessary on some early model 4-cylinder engines, loosen and remove the power steering pump brace. On these same engines it will be necessary to unfasten and reposition the air cleaner housing for access.
  5. If equipped, unbolt the compressor brace.
  6. Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the compressor. Most vehicles covered by this manual utilize a refrigerant line manifold which is secured to the compressor using a single bolt. Immediately plug all openings in order to prevent system contamination.
  7. Remove the compressor mounting fasteners.
  8. Make sure no other engine wiring is in the way, then remove the compressor from the engine.

To install:
  1. Position the compressor to the engine and loosely install the fasteners.

  1. If equipped with a V-belt, position the belt over the compressor pulley and properly adjust the belt tension. Tighten the compressor mounting fasteners to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).

All O-rings from disconnected refrigerant lines should be discarded and replaced with new ones. Before installing new O-rings, lubricate them with a small amount of clean refrigerant oil.

  1. Remove the plugs from the refrigerant lines and compressor openings, then install the lines to the compressor. Tighten the manifold bolt to 24-25 ft. lbs. (33-35 Nm).
  2. If equipped, install and secure the compressor brace.
  3. On early 4-cylinder models, so equipped, install the power steering pump brace, then reposition and secure the air cleaner assembly.
  4. If equipped with a serpentine drive belt, hold the belt tensioner in the released position and slip the belt over the compressor pulley. Verify the belt is properly aligned on all of the pulleys, then slowly lower the tensioner into contact with the belt.
  5. Engage the compressor wiring.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable, then properly evacuate and recharge the A/C system. If the proper equipment is not available, the vehicle should be taken to a professional service station immediately to have this done. Compressor damage may occur if operated without first recharging the system.

MFI-Turbo
  1. Either discharge the refrigerant into a suitable recovery system (if available) or have the system discharged by a professional shop.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then drain the engine cooling system.
  3. Drain the charge air cooling system and remove the charge air cooler from the engine. For more information, please refer to the procedure later in this section.
  4. Remove the retaining bolt and washer, then disconnect the refrigerant line manifold from the compressor. Remove and discard the old O-rings from the lines. Immediately plug all openings in order to prevent system contamination.
  5. Disengage the compressor electrical connector.
  6. Relieve the belt tension, then remove the serpentine drive belt from the compressor pulley.
  7. Remove the nuts holding the turbo water return pipe bracket and L-shaped compressor bracket to the upper mounting bolts.
  8. Remove the other nut and bolt from the L-shaped bracket at the rear of the compressor, then remove the bracket from the engine.

In order to remove the compressor bracket from the upper compressor mounting bolt, it will be necessary to loosen the turbo water return pipe fitting at the turbocharger and pull the bracket off the upper compressor mounting bolt.

  1. Remove the remaining nuts from the upper and lower compressor mounting bolts, then remove the bolts.
  2. Remove the compressor from the engine.

To install:
  1. Position the compressor to the mounting bracket.
  2. Install the upper and lower compressor mounting bolts. To install the upper compressor mounting bolts the flat on the "D'' shaped bolt head flange must first be positioned to clear the compressor clutch and then repositioned to index against the anti-rotation lug on the mounting bracket. This way, the bolt head will seat flush and not spin when the nut is driven.
  3. Install the inner nuts to the upper and lower compressor mounting bolts and tighten to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
  4. Install the turbo water return pipe bracket onto the upper compressor mounting bolts, then connect the turbo water return pipe fitting at the turbocharger.
  5. Position the L-shaped compressor bracket to the upper compressor mounting bolt, then install the other bracket nut and bolt.
  6. Install the L-shaped bracket retaining nut on the rear of the upper compressor mounting bolt, then install the nuts holding the turbo water return pipe bracket on the other upper compressor mounting bolt.
  7. Install the serpentine drive belt over the compressor pulley. Verify the belt is properly aligned on all of the pulleys, then slowly lower the tensioner into contact with the belt.
  8. Engage the compressor electrical connector.

New oval cross-section O-rings have been released to provide more effective sealing of the refrigerant line connections at the compressor head. These new O-rings should be used whenever installing the manifold to the compressor. The cavities for the O-rings should be lubricated using clean refrigerant oil and the O-rings should be pressed into place using a thin, smooth plastic rod which will not damage the rings.

  1. Install new O-rings to the refrigerant hose manifold, then install the manifold along with the washer and retaining bolt. Tighten the manifold bolt to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  2. Install the charge air cooler assembly.
  3. Connect the negative battery cable.
  4. Properly refill the engine cooling system and charge air cooling system. Please refer to Chapter 1 of this manual for details.
  5. Properly evacuate and recharge the refrigerant system. Please refer to Chapter 1 of this manual for details.
