How to replace heater core on Honda accord?

Removal & Installation

Accord

NOTE

Make sure to acquire the anti-theft code from the radio and write down the frequencies for the radio-s preset buttons.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
   
   CAUTION

   After disconnecting the negative battery cable, wait for at least 3 minutes for the air bag module to deplete its energy before working the on the instrument panel or steering wheel.
2. Discharge the air conditioning system. Disconnect the suction and the receiver lines from the evaporator core.
3. Drain the engine coolant.
4. From under the hood, open the cable clamp. Disconnect the heater control cable from the valve. Turn the valve to the fully opened position. Disconnect the heater hoses from heater core assembly. Remove the mounting nut from the heater unit.
5. Remove the center console as follows.
   
   
   If equipped with manual transaxle, remove the shifter knob

   Detach the center console retaining clips and pull the assembly upward

   If equipped with heated seats, detach the heat switch connectors

   Pry up on the right side of the console pocket, detach the clips and remove the pocket

   Remove the screws, detach the clips and disconnect the front power accessory connector

   Open the console lid and remove the console mat

   If equipped, disconnect the rear accessory power socket electrical connector

   Remove the console retaining screws and remove the console from the vehicle
6. Remove the drivers side lower dashboard cover.
7. Remove the passengers side lower dashboard cover.
8. Remove the center pocket assembly. Remove the glovebox.
9. On 2004-06 vehicles remove the drivers side under cover panel. Remove the drivers and passengers kick panels. Remove the A-pillar trim panels.
10. Remove the steering column as follows.
    
    
    Remove the driver-s air bag assembly

    Remove the steering wheel

    Remove the steering column covers

    Remove the steering joint cover

    Release the tilt/telescopic lever and adjust the column in the full up position

    Tighten the tilt/telescopic lever

    Hold the slider shaft on the column using a piece of wire

    Tighten the tilt/telescopic lever

    Disconnect the wire harness from the combination switch and remove the switch

    Disconnect the connectors from the ignition switch and release the wire harness clips from the column

    Remove the steering joint bolt and disconnect the steering joint from the pinion shaft

    Remove the steering column retaining nuts and remove the column from the vehicle
11. Remove the driver-s side center lower cover. Remove the passenger-s side center lower cover and rear duct vent. Remove the SRS control unit.
12. On the driver-s side disconnect all electrical connectors, air hoses and harness that interfere with the removal of the dashboard.
13. In the middle section of the dashboard disconnect the parking brake switch connector, radio antenna connector and lead. Disconnect all electrical connectors, air hoses and harness that interfere with the removal of the dashboard. Disconnect the ECM/PCM connector.
14. On the passenger-s side disconnect all electrical connectors, air hoses and harness that interfere with the removal of the dashboard.
15. Remove the brake pedal support member.
16. Open the driver-s side door remove the bolts and clips after remove their protective caps. Lift upward on the dashboard/steering hanger beam to release if from the guide pins. Be sure all electrical connectors are unplugged.

17. Carefully remove the dashboard assembly from the vehicle.
18. Disconnect the connectors from the air mix control motor, evaporator temperature sensor, power transistor and recirculation control motor.
19. Remove the wiring harness clips, connector clip and wire harness. Remove the heater ducts.

20. Remove the mounting nuts and remove the blower-heater unit from the vehicle.
21. Remove the heater core cover. Remove the heater core.

To install:

1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
2. Evacuate, charge and leak test the air conditioning system refrigerant.
3. Operate the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
4. Enter the antitheft codes for the radio and the navigation system. Set the clock.
5. Reprogram the power window control unit as follows.
6. Turn the ignition switch ON. Lower the window, all the way down. Open the driver-s side door.
7. Turn the ignition switch OFF. Push and hold the drivers window DOWN switch. Turn the ignition switch ON. Release the driver-s window DOWN switch. This must be done within five seconds.
8. Repeat the above step three more times. Wait one second.
9. Confirm that the AUTO UP and AUTO DOWN do not work. If they work repeat the procedure, paying close attention to the five second time limit
10. Move the driver-s window all the way down by holding the drivers window DOWN switch to the AUTO DOWN position.
11. Pull up and hold the driver-s window UP switch to the AUTO UP position until the window reaches the fully closed position. Hold the switch for one second.
12. Confirm that the power window master switch has been reset by using the driver-s window AUTO UP and DOWN function.
13. If the AUTO UP and DOWN feature is still not working, repeat the complete procedure, paying close attention to the five second time limit.
