How to replace Strut Assembly?


Strut (MacPherson Strut) Assembly 


Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the brake hose and the tube bracket.

NOTE
Do not pry the brake hose and tube clamp away when removing it.

  1. If equipped with ABS, disconnect the front speed sensor mounting clamp from the strut.
  2. Support the lower arm and remove the strut to knuckle bolts. Use a piece of wire to suspend the knuckle to keep the weight off the brake hose.
  3. If equipped with Active Electronic Control Suspension (Active-ECS) perform the following:
  1. Loosen the nut that secures the air line to the to the top of the strut and discard the O-ring.
  2. Remove the bolts that secure the actuator to the top of the strut and remove the component. Disconnect the wiring harness.

NOTE
Before removing the top bolts, make matchmarks on the body and the strut insulator for proper reassembly.

  1. Remove the strut upper nuts and remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Install the strut to the vehicle and tighten the upper mounting nuts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  2. Align the strut to the knuckle and connect with the mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to 70-76 ft. lbs. (90-105 Nm).
  3. If equipped with Active-ECS, perform the following:
  1. Install the air line with a new O-ring.
  2. Install the actuator to the top of the strut. Connect the wiring harness.
  1. Install the brake hose bracket and the ABS clamp, if equipped.
  2. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Have a front end alignment performed.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support vehicle.
  3. Remove the brake hose and tube bracket retainer bolt and bracket from the front strut. Do not pry the brake hose and tube clamp away when removing.
  4. If equipped with ABS, disconnect the front speed sensor mounting clamp from the strut.
  5. Support the lower arm using floor jack or equivalent. Remove the lower strut to knuckle bolts.

NOTE
Before removing the top bolts, make matchmarks on the body and the strut insulator for proper reassembly.

  1. Remove the strut upper mounting bolts.
  2. Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Install the strut to the vehicle and install the top mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  2. Position the strut on the knuckle and install the mounting bolts. While holding the head of the lower mounting bolt, tighten the nuts to 80-94 ft. lbs. (110-130 Nm).
  3. Install the brake hose bracket and the ABS clamp, if equipped.
  4. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  5. Have a front end alignment performed.
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Raise and safely support vehicle.
  4. Remove the brake hose and tube bracket. Do not pry the brake hose and tube clamp away when removing it.
  5. If equipped with ABS, disconnect the front speed sensor mounting clamp from the strut.
  6. Support the lower arm and remove the strut to knuckle bolts. Use a piece of wire to suspend the knuckle to keep the weight off the brake hose.
  7. If equipped with Active Electronic Control Suspension (Active-ECS) perform the following:
    1. Loosen the nut that secures the air line to the to the top of the strut and discard the O-ring.
    2. Remove the bolts that secure the actuator to the top of the strut and remove the component. Disconnect the wiring harness.
  8. Before removing the top bolts, make matchmarks on the body and the strut insulator for proper reassembly.
  9. Remove the strut upper bolts and remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
  10. Compress the coil spring using a spring compressor until the spring just comes away from one of the seats.
  11. Remove the center nut from the strut and remove the upper mounting bracket and bushings.
  12. Remove the coil spring.
To install:
  1. Install the compressed spring on the strut assembly. Install the upper bushings and the mounting bracket. Install the nut and tighten it to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  2. Install the strut to the vehicle and install the top bolts.
  3. Install the strut to the knuckle and install the bolts.
  4. If equipped with Active-ECS, perform the following:
    1. Install the air line with a new O-ring.
    2. Install the actuator to the top of the strut. Connect the wiring harness.
  5. Install the brake hose bracket and the ABS clamp.
  6. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8. Perform a front end alignment.

  5. Support the lower arm and remove the strut to knuckle bolts. Use a piece of wire to suspend the knuckle to keep the weight off the brake hose.
  6. If equipped with Active Electronic Control Suspension (Active-ECS) perform the following:
    1. Loosen the nut that secures the air line to the to the top of the strut and discard the O-ring.
    2. Remove the bolts that secure the actuator to the top of the strut and remove the component. Disconnect the wiring harness.
  7. Before removing the top bolts, make matchmarks on the body and the strut insulator for proper reassembly.
  8. Remove the strut upper bolts and remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Strut to the vehicle and install the top bolts
    Strut to the knuckle and install the bolts
  2. If equipped with Active-ECS, perform the following:
    1. Install the air line with a new O-ring.
    2. Install the actuator to the top of the strut. Connect the wiring harness.
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Brake hose bracket and the ABS clamp
    Wheel and tire assembly
    Negative battery cable
  4. Perform a front end alignment. 
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the brake hose and the tube bracket.
    NOTE
    Do not pry the brake hose and tube clamp away when removing it.
  4. If equipped with Anti-Lock Brake (ABS), disconnect the front speed sensor mounting clamp from the strut.

    2. Remove the bolts that secure the actuator to the top of the strut and remove the component. Disconnect the wiring harness.
      NOTE

  7. Remove the strut upper nuts and remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
  8. Compress the coil spring using a spring compressor until the spring just comes away from one of the seats.
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Center nut from the strut and remove the upper mounting bracket and bushings
    Coil spring
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Compressed spring on the strut assembly
    Upper bushings and the mounting bracket
    Nut and tighten it to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm)
    Strut to the vehicle and tighten the upper mounting nuts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
  2. Align the strut to the knuckle and connect with the mounting bolts. Torque the mounting bolts to 70-76 ft. lbs. (90-105 Nm).
  3. If equipped with Active-ECS, perform the following:
    1. Install the air line with a new O-ring.
    2. Install the actuator to the top of the strut. Connect the wiring harness.
  4. Install or connect the following:

    Brake hose bracket and the ABS clamp, if equipped
    Wheel and tire assembly
  5. Perform a front end alignment.

  1. Remove the top shock absorber assembly mounting nuts from inside the engine compartment.

  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Remove the stabilizer link mounting nut.

  4. Unfasten the shock absorber assembly lower mounting bolts.

  5. Remove the damper fork mounting bolt, then remove the damper fork from the vehicle.

  6. Remove the shock absorber assembly by maneuvering it out of the vehicle.

  7. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Be sure to tighten the retainers to the specifications shown in the accompanying figure.
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
    3 upper shock absorber mounting nuts. Do not remove the larger nut in the center of the strut at this time.
    Stabilizer link from the damper fork
    Damper fork mounting bolt
    Shock absorber assembly from the vehicle
  3. Use a coil spring compressor and compress the coil spring.
  4. While holding the piston rod, remove the self-locking nut.

  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Upper bracket assembly and spring pad
    Collar, upper bushing, cup assembly, bump rubber and dust cover
    Coil spring from the shock absorber
To install:
  1. Align the end of the coil spring with the stepped part of the spring seat and install the compressed coil spring on the shock.
  2. Install the dust cover, bump rubber, cup assembly, upper bushing, collar, upper spring pad and bracket assembly on the strut.

  3. Install or connect the following:

    Upper bushing and washer on the piston rod
    New self-locking nut on the piston rod. Temporarily tighten the nut.
  4. Carefully remove the spring compressor from the spring. Torque the self-locking nut to 16 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  5. Position the shock absorber assembly in the damper fork and install the mounting bolt.
  6. Pass the studs in the upper bracket assembly through the holes in the inner fender and install the 3 mounting nuts.
  7. Connect the stabilizer link to the damper fork.
  8. Install the wheel assembly.
  9. Safely lower the vehicle to the floor.
  10. Check the front wheel alignment and adjust if necessary.
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. On 2004-2005 Spyder, remove the strut tower bar.
  3. Disconnect the stabilizer link. Remove the brake hose bracket.
  4. On vehicles equipped with ABS, remove the wheel speed sensor clamp.
  5. Remove the lower strut bolts and nuts. Remove the upper strut nuts.
  6. Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2. Be sure to check and adjust the front end alignment, as required.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support vehicle.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Appropriate wheel assembly
    Sway bar link from the damper fork
    Damper fork lower through-bolt and upper pinch bolt
    Damper fork assembly
    Shock absorber upper nuts and remove the strut assembly from the vehicle
  4. Compress the coil spring with a special compression tool.

    Self-locking nut and washer
    Upper bushing, upper bracket assembly, the upper spring pad, and the collar
    Other upper bushing, cup assembly, bump rubber, dust cover, and the coil spring. Carefully remove the coil spring compression tool
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Compressed coil spring to the shock absorber assembly. Be sure to align the edge of coil spring to the stepped part of the spring seat. Install the dust cover, bump rubber, cup assembly, upper bushing, collar, and upper spring pad.
    Upper bracket assembly and position it so that the 3 bolts are in the correct position
    Upper bushing, washer, and locknut. Torque the locknut to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
    Shock absorber and tighten the upper mounting nuts to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm)
  2. Align the shock to the damper fork and install the damper fork. Tighten the lower through-bolt/nut to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm) and the upper pinch bolt to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  3. Connect the sway bar link to the damper fork and tighten the link nut to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
  4. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  5. Perform a front end alignment.
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. On GTS remove the strut tower bar bracket.
  3. Disconnect the stabilizer link. Remove the brake hose bracket.
  4. On vehicles equipped with ABS, remove the wheel speed sensor clamp.
  5. Remove the lower strut bolts and nuts. Remove the upper strut nuts.
  6. Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2. Be sure to check and adjust the front end alignment, as required.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support vehicle.
  3. Remove the brake hose and tube bracket retainer bolt and bracket from the front strut. Do not pry the brake hose and tube clamp away when removing.
  4. If equipped with ABS, disconnect the front speed sensor mounting clamp from the strut.

  3. Remove the wheel speed sensor harness bracket.
  4. Remove the lower strut bolts and nuts from the knuckle connection. Remove the upper strut nuts.
  5. Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2. Be sure to check and adjust the front end alignment, as required.
Lancer
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support vehicle.
  3. Remove the brake hose and tube bracket retainer bolt and bracket from the front strut. Do not pry the brake hose and tube clamp away when removing.
  4. If equipped with ABS, disconnect the front speed sensor mounting clamp from the strut.
  5. Support the lower arm using floor jack. Remove the lower strut to knuckle bolts.
    NOTE
    Before removing the top bolts, make matchmarks on the body and the strut insulator for proper reassembly.
  6. Remove the strut upper mounting bolts. Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
  7. Compress the coil spring using a spring compressor until the spring just comes away from one of the seats.
  8. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Center nut from the strut and remove the upper mounting bracket and bushings
    Coil spring
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Compressed spring on the strut assembly
    Upper bushings and the mounting bracket
    Nut and tighten it to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm)
    Strut to the vehicle and install the top mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) for Mirage and 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm) for Lancer.
  2. Position the strut on the knuckle and install the mounting bolts. While holding the head of the lower mounting bolt, tighten the nuts to 123 ft. lbs. (167 Nm).
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Brake hose bracket and the ABS clamp, if equipped
    Wheel and tire assembly
  4. Perform a front end alignment.
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the brake hose bracket.
  3. On vehicles equipped with ABS, remove the wheel speed sensor clamp.
  4. Remove the lower strut bolts and nuts from the knuckle connection. Remove the upper strut nuts.
  5. Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2. Be sure to check and adjust the front end alignment, as required.
