- Place the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds before working on the vehicle to disarm the air bag.
- Fix the steering wheel with the seat belt in order to prevent rotation and damage to the spiral cable.
- Remove engine under covers.
- If equipped, remove the steering column hole cover sheet.
- On 2002-03 models, perform the following:
- Disconnect the 2 connectors.
- Disconnect the 2 clamps.
- Remove the bolt and disconnect the ground wire.
- Remove the 2 bolts and EMPS bracket.
- Put match marks in the sliding yoke and intermediate shaft.
- Loosen the top bolt and remove the lower bolt to separate the sliding yoke.
- If necessary, remove the steering column hole cover from the body. Be careful not to damage the clips.
- Remove the front wheels.
- Disconnect the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.
- Disconnect the stabilizer links from the struts.
- Disconnect the lower suspension arm from the lower ball joint.
- Place match marks on the intermediate shaft assembly and power steering gear.
- Remove the bolt and disconnect the intermediate shaft from the control valve shaft.
- Disconnect the torque rod.
- Remove the front suspension crossmember assembly.
- Remove the stabilizer bar mounting brackets and the stabilizer bar.
- Remove the 4 bolts and power steering gear assembly from the front suspension crossmember.
- On 2002-03 models, remove the bracket and grommet from the power steering gear assembly.
To install:
- On 2002-03 models, install the bracket and grommet to the power steering gear assembly. Install the bracket with the inscribed mark facing to the front of the vehicle.
- On 2004-06 models, install the steering column hole cover to the steering gear.
- Install the power steering gear assembly with the 4 new bolts to the front suspension crossmember. Torque the bolts to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm) for 2002-03 models, and 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm) for 2004-06 models.
- Install the stabilizer bar and stabilizer bar mounting brackets. Torque the mounting bracket bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
- Install the front suspension crossmember. Torque the left and right front corner bolts to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm). Torque the left and right rear corner bolts to 116 ft. lbs. (157 Nm).
- Connect the torque rod. Tighten the through bolt to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
- Align the match marks and connect the intermediate shaft to the control valve shaft. Torque the bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
- On 2002-03 models, perform the following:
- Install the EMPS bracket and tighten the 2 bolts to 52 inch lbs. (5.5 Nm).
- Connect the ground wire and tighten the bolt to 52 inch lbs. (5.5 Nm).
- Connect the 2 clamps.
- Connect the 2 connectors.
- Connect the left and right ball joints to the front lower control arms. Torque to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm) for 2002-03 models, and 66 ft. lbs. (89 Nm) for 2004-06 models.
- Connect the stabilizer bar link to the strut. If the ball joint turns together with the nut, use a hexagon wrench to hold the stud. Torque to 55 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
- Connect the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Torque the tie rod end nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
- Install the front wheels.
- Put the dust seal back to the engine compartment side.
- Align the match marks on the intermediate shaft assembly and control valve shaft. Install and tighten the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
- Install the steering column hole cover.
- Align the match marks on the intermediate shaft assembly and sliding yoke. Install and tighten the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
- If equipped, install the steering column hole cover sheet.
- Install the engine under covers.
- Remove the seat belt from the steering wheel.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Place the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
- Check the front wheel alignment.
- Perform initialization.
