5VZ-E Engine

Alternator: New-160 lbs. (712 N) Used-100 lbs. (445 N)
Power Steering: New-158 lbs. (702 N) Used-103 lbs. (458 N)
Air Conditioning: New-160 lbs. (712 N) Used-100 lbs. (445 N)

NOTE
This engine uses three individual accessory drive belts, identified as the Alternator drive belt, A/C drive belt and Power Steering pump drive belt. The adjustment procedure is the same for all.

  1. Loosen the lock nut(s) completely and then temporally tighten to 22 inch lbs. (2.5 Nm).
  2. Use the adjusting bolt to adjust the belt tension:
    1. A/C and Alternator new belt: 145-185 lbs.
    2. A/C and Alternator used belt: 75-125 lbs.
    3. Power steering new belt: 135-180 lbs.
    4. Power steering used belt: 85-120 lbs.
      NOTE

Inspection

Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.
Visually check the belt for excessive wear and frayed cords. Cracks on the rib side of a belt are considered acceptable. If the belt has chunks missing from the ribs, it should be replaced. If any defect has been found, replace the drive belt. Ensure the belt fits properly in the ribbed grooves. Check with your hand to confirm that the belt has not slipped out of the groove on the bottom of the pulley.
