How to Replace Brake Drums on Ford?

The details to replace Brake Drums are as follows:----

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION details are as follows:----

1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
2. Remove the wheel.
3. Remove the push-on nuts, if equipped.
   
   NOTE

   It may be necessary to back off the brake shoe adjustment in order to remove the brake drum. This is because the drum might be grooved or worn from being in service for an extended period of time.
4. If the brake drum will not slide off the hub easily, remove the brake adjusting hole cover from the backing plate. Insert a screwdriver and a Brake Adjustment Tool (D81L-1103-C) or equivalent.
5. Disengage the brake shoe adjusting lever and loosen the brake adjuster screw.
6. Remove the brake drum.

To install:

1. If the inside of the drum has a coating of rust or a ridge, clean it with a piece of coarse sandpaper before installation.
2. Before installing a new brake drum, be sure to remove any protective coating with brake cleaner or a suitable fast-drying cleaner.
3. Install the brake drum.
4. Adjust the brakes.
5. Install the wheel.
6. Lower the vehicle.

1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
3. Remove the retainers holding the drum to the hub, if installed and discard.
4. Grasp the drum and remove.
5. If the drum will not slide off with light force, the brake shoes will need to be backed off. Remove the rubber plug on the backing plate and insert a screwdriver and a brake adjusting tool into the slot. Hold the adjuster lever away from the adjuster wheel with the screwdriver and back of the adjuster wheel with the brake adjusting tool.
6. Remove the brake drum. Inspect the drum for wear and/or damage. Machine or replace as necessary. If machining, observe the maximum diameter specification.

To install:

1. If a new brake drum is being installed, remove the protective coating from the inner brake surface.
2. Use a suitable brake adjustment gauge to measure the inside diameter of the brake drum.

3. Adjust the brake shoes to match the inside diameter of the brake drum.
4. Slide the brake drum onto the hub. Make sure that the brake shoes are not tight to the brake drum.
5. Install the rubber plug in the access hole. Retainers do not need to be reused to hold the drum.
6. Install the wheel and tire assembly. Torque the lug nuts to 85-105 ft. lbs. (115-142 Nm).
7. Lower the vehicle.
8. Check and fill the brake master cylinder as required.
9. Road-test the vehicle and check for proper brake operation.
