REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Procedure is as follows:----

- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Relieve the fuel system pressure.
- Drain the cooling system.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
Intake manifoldExhaust manifoldValve coversIgnition wires and ignition coil/module assemblyAlternator front mounting bracket and alternatorAir conditioning bracket to cylinder head boltPower steering pumpAccessory drive belt tensionerFuel pipe heat shieldRocker arm assemblies, note their original positionPushrods and guide plateCylinder head boltsCylinder head
To install:
- Place the new cylinder head gasket on the engine block dowels with the noteTHIS SIDE UP facing the cylinder head and the arrow facing the front of the engine. Position the cylinder head on the engine block.
NOTEThe head gasket is identified by either a L or a R stamped on it next to the arrow.
NOTEThis engine uses special torque to yield head bolts. The procedure must be followed carefully and new bolts must be used whenever the head is removed. Total bolt torque should not exceed 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
- Install new cylinder head bolts and torque them in sequence as follows:
- Step 1: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
- Step 2: Plus 120°.
- Install or connect the following:
NOTEApply a thread lock compound to the rocker arm pedestal bolts before assembly.
Pushrods and guide plateRocker arm assemblies into their original location
Valve coversFuel pipe heat shieldAccessory drive belt tensionerPower steering pumpAir conditioning compressor bracket bolt. Torque it to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).Alternator front mounting bracket, and alternatorIgnition coil/module assembly and spark plug wiresExhaust manifold. Torque the bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).Intake manifoldNegative battery cable - Refill and bleed the cooling system.
- Start the engine and check for leaks and proper operation.
