The procedure is similar for both ford and Lincoln car models:-----
The details to replace valve covers are as follows:----
Removal & Installation
Left Side
Specific to:
Ford Edge 2008-2009
Lincoln MKX 2008-2009
WARNING
During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
- Remove the crankcase vent tube.
- Remove the LH ignition coils, as outlined in the Engine Electrical Section.
- Remove the oil level indicator.
- Disconnect the LH Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) solenoid electrical connector.
- Detach all of the wiring harness retainers from the valve cover and the stud bolts.
Fig. View of the crankcase vent tube (1), engine control wiring harness retainer (2) and left side VCT solenoid connector (3) - Remove the 11 stud bolts and the LH valve cover.
- Discard the gasket.
NOTEVCT solenoid seal removal shown, spark plug tube seal removal similar.
- Inspect the VCT solenoid seals and the spark plug tube seals. Remove any damaged seals using the special tool.
- Clean the valve cover, cylinder head and engine front cover sealing surfaces with metal surface cleaner.
To install:
NOTE
Installation of new seals is only required if damaged seals were removed during disassembly of the engine.
- Using the special tools, install new VCT solenoid and/or spark plug tube seals.
WARNINGFailure to use the correct RTV Silicone Sealant (TA-357) may cause the engine oil to foam excessively and result in serious engine damage.
NOTEIf the valve cover is not installed and the fasteners tightened within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use silicone gasket remover and metal surface prep. Follow the directions on the packaging. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage. - Apply a 0.31 inch (8mm) bead of RTV Silicone Sealant (TA-357, or equivalent) to the engine front cover-to-LH cylinder head joints.
- Using a new gasket, install the LH valve cover and 11 stud bolts. Tighten in the sequence shown to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
- Attach all of the wiring harness retainers to the valve cover and the stud bolts.
- Attach the LH VCT solenoid electrical connector.
- Install the oil level indicator.
- Install the LH ignition coils.
- Install the crankcase vent tube.
