- Remove the oil pump cover and rotors from the timing chain front cover.
- Remove the plug, spring and relief valve from the pump body.
- Coat the valve with engine oil and check that it falls smoothly into the valve hole by its own weight. If not, replace the relief valve. If necessary, replace the oil pump assembly.
- Place the drive and driven rotors into the timing chain cover with the marks facing upward.
- Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the drive and driven rotor tips. Clearance should measure no more than 0.0063 in. (0.16 mm). If the clearance is greater than maximum, replace the rotor as a set.
- Using a feeler gauge and precision straight edge, measure the clearance between the rotors and precision straight edge. Side clearance should measure no more than 0.0035 in. (0.09 mm). If the clearance is greater than maximum, replace the drive and driven rotors. If necessary, replace the timing chain cover assembly.
- Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the driven rotor and body. Rotor body clearance should measure no more than 0.0128 in. (0.325 mm). If the clearance is greater than maximum, replace the drive and driven rotors. If necessary, replace the timing chain cover assembly.
- Reinstall the relief valve and spring into the valve hole. Install the relief valve plug and tighten to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
- Remove the oil pump from the engine.
- Using snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring to remove the retainer, spring and relief valve from the pump body.
- Remove the screws and take off the pump body cover to access the driven rotors.
- Coat the valve with engine oil and check that it falls smoothly into the valve hole by its own weight. If not, replace the relief valve. If necessary, replace the oil pump assembly.
- Place the drive and driven rotors into the oil pump body with the marks facing upward.
- Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the drive and driven rotor tips. Clearance should measure no more than 0.0138 in. (0.35 mm). If the clearance is greater than maximum, replace the rotor as a set.
- Using a feeler gauge and precision straight edge, measure the clearance between the rotors and precision straight edge. Side clearance should measure no more than 0.0059 in. (0.15 mm). If the clearance is greater than maximum, replace the drive and driven rotors. If necessary, replace the timing chain cover assembly.
- Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the driven rotor and body. Rotor body clearance should measure no more than 0.0118 in. (0.30 mm). If the clearance is greater than maximum, replace the drive and driven rotors. If necessary, replace the timing chain cover assembly.
- Install the oil pump body cover and tighten the screws to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
- Reinstall the relief valve, spring and retainer into the valve hole. Using snap ring pliers, install the snap ring.
- Remove the oil pump from the engine.
- Remove the plug, spring and relief valve from the pump body.
- Remove the screws and take off the pump body cover to access the driven rotors.
- Coat the valve with engine oil and check that it falls smoothly into the valve hole by its own weight. If not, replace the relief valve. If necessary, replace the oil pump assembly.
- Place the drive and driven rotors into the oil pump body with the marks facing upward.
- Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the drive and driven rotor tips. Clearance should measure no more than 0.0138 in. (0.35 mm). If the clearance is greater than maximum, replace the rotor as a set.
- Using a feeler gauge and precision straight edge, measure the clearance between the rotors and precision straight edge. Side clearance should measure no more than 0.0059 in. (0.15 mm). If the clearance is greater than maximum, replace the drive and driven rotors. If necessary, replace the timing chain cover assembly.
- Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the driven rotor and body. Rotor body clearance should measure no more than 0.0118 in. (0.30 mm). If the clearance is greater than maximum, replace the drive and driven rotors. If necessary, replace the timing chain cover assembly.
- Install the oil pump body cover and tighten the screws to 8 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
- Reinstall the relief valve, spring and plug into the valve hole.
Removal & Installation
1gr-FE Engine
On the 4.0L (1GR-FE) Engines, the oil pump is located inside the timing chain cover. To access the oil pump, the timing chain cover must be removed.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Drain the cooling system.
- Drain the engine oil.
- Removing the timing chain front cover. For additional information, refer to the following topic: -Timing Chain Front Cover, Removal & Installation-.
- From the inside front cover, remove the oil pipe and O-rings.
- Remove the oil pump mounting bolts to remove the oil pump.
To install:
- Install the oil pump cover to the timing chain front cover. Tighten the mounting bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
- Install a new O-ring to the oil pump cover and oil pipe.
- Install the oil pipe to the oil pump body and timing chain front cover. Tighten the mounting bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
- Install the timing chain front cover.
- Refill the cooling system to the correct level.
- Refill the engine with oil to the correct level.
- Start the engine and check for leaks.
The oil pump assembly is mounted in the timing chain cover. To properly service the oil pump, the timing chain cover must be removed from the cylinder block.
This is a difficult and lengthy procedure requiring removal of many components including the front differential assembly and the cylinder head, which also requires removal of the timing chain assembly. This procedure can also be performed with the engine out of the vehicle, which may be an option, depending on the equipment and facilities available. If other heavy engine work is required (for example, a failed oil pump may have caused crankshaft and bearing damage or other engine damage) it may just be easier to remove the engine as an assembly and perform the work on a suitable engine stand.
The following procedure is based on Toyota's in-frame procedure.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Drain the engine oil and cooling system.
- Raise and safely support the vehicle.
- Remove the engine undercover.
- If equipped with 4WD, remove the front differential and halfshaft assembly.
- On California vehicles with 3RZ-FE engine, remove the two bolts and disconnect the air pipe.
- Disconnect the upper hose from the radiator.
- Remove the oil dipstick guide by removing the bolt.
- If equipped with power steering, remove the drive belt by loosening the lock bolt and adjusting bolt.
- Remove the fan shrouds.
- If equipped with A/C, loosen the idler pulley nut and adjusting bolt, then remove the drive belt from the engine.
- Remove the alternator drive belt, fan (with fan clutch), water pump pulley, and the fan shroud as follows:
- Loosen the water pump pulley mounting nuts.
- Loosen the lock, pivot and adjusting bolts for the alternator and remove the alternator drive belt from the engine.
- Remove the four water pump pulley mounting nuts.
- Remove the fan (with fan clutch) and the water pump pulley.
- Remove the cylinder head from the engine.
- If equipped with A/C, disconnect the compressor and bracket as follows:
- Remove the four mounting bolts and disconnect the compressor from the bracket. Do NOT disconnect the A/C pressure lines from the compressor. Suspend the compressor away from the engine.
- Remove the A/C compressor bracket by removing the four bolts.
- Remove the alternator, adjusting bar and bracket as follows:
- Loosen the lock bolt, pivot bolt, nut and adjusting bolt at the alternator.
- After loosening the adjusting bolt, remove the alternator drive belt from the engine.
- Disconnect the alternator wiring.
- Remove the nut, and then disconnect the alternator wire.
- Disconnect the wire harness with the clip.
- Remove the lock bolt, pivot bolt, nut, and the alternator from the engine.
- Unbolt and remove the adjusting bar.
- Unbolt and remove the bracket.
- Unbolt and remove the crankshaft position sensor.
- If equipped with 2WD, remove the stiffener plates by removing the eight bolts.
- Remove the flywheel housing undercover and dust seal.
- Remove the oil pan by removing the 16 mounting bolts and two nuts.
Be careful not to damage the flanges of the oil pan and cylinder block.
- Remove the two bolts, two nuts, oil strainer, and gasket.
- Remove the crankshaft pulley:
- If equipped with A/C, remove the No. 2 and No. 3 crankshaft pulleys by removing the four bolts.
- Using SST 09213-54015 and 09330-00021 or equivalents, remove the crankshaft pulley bolts.
- Remove the crankshaft pulley.
- Remove the timing chain cover as follows:
- Remove the two water bypass pipe mounting nuts.
- Remove the two timing chain cover mounting bolts.
- Remove the nine mounting bolts and two mounting nuts from the timing chain cover.
- Using a rubber hammer, loosen the chain cover, timing chain cover and three gaskets.
- Disassemble the oil pump from the front cover, pump cover, drive rotor, driven rotor and O-ring.
- Remove the relief valve as follows:
- Using snapring pliers, remove the snapring for the relief valve.
- Remove the retainer, spring(s) and relief valve from the front cover.
To install:
- Install the relief valve as follows:
- Install the relief valve, spring(s) and retainer to the valve cover.
- Using snapring pliers, install the snapring to hold the relief valve.
Pack petroleum jelly between the oil pump gears. This will prime the pump during initial startup. DO NOT use chassis grease, as it will plug up the system. Ordinary petroleum jelly will seal the gear cavity long enough so the pump will prime and start drawing oil as soon as the crankshaft begins to turn, then dissolve as the engine warms.
- Install the drive and driven rotors as follows:
- Place the drive and driven rotors into the pump body.
- Place a new O-ring to the pump body.
- Install the pump cover with the nine screws.
- Install the timing chain cover.
- Install the two rear timing chain cover mounting bolts and water bypass pipe mounting nuts. Tighten the bolts and nuts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
- Align the pulley set key with the key groove of the pulley and slide on the pulley. Install and tighten the pulley bolt to 193 ft. lbs. (260 Nm).
- If equipped with A/C, install the crankshaft pulleys with the four bolts. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
- Install the oil strainer, and then tighten the fasteners to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
- Clean the oil pan and cylinder block mating surfaces. Apply Formed In-Place Gasket (FIPG) sealer to the oil pan. Install the oil pan and tighten the fasteners to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
- Install the flywheel housing undercover and dust seal.
- If equipped with 2WD, install the stiffener plates. Tighten the eight bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
- Using a new O-ring, install the crankshaft position sensor; tighten to 74 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
- Install the alternator to the engine as follows:
- Attach the alternator to the engine, then install the nut, pivot bolt, and the lock bolt. Do NOT tighten the bolts or nut at this time.
- Connect the wire harness with the clip to the alternator.
- Install the alternator wire with the nut.
- Connect the alternator harness.
- Install the drive belt to the engine.
- Tighten the drive belt with the adjusting bolt. Belt tension should be as follows:
New belt: 155-175 lbs. (689-778 N)Old belt: 75-125 lbs. (334-556 N) - Once the belt is tight, tighten the pivot bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm); lock bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
- If equipped with A/C, install the compressor as follows:
- Install the A/C compressor bracket with the four bolts; tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
- Connect the A/C compressor to the bracket with the four bolts, tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
- Install the cylinder head.
- Install the water pump pulley, fan shroud, fan (with fan clutch), and the alternator drive belt as follows:
- Place the fan (with the fan clutch), water pump pulley and fan shroud in position.
- Install the water pump pulley mounting nuts, but do not tighten the nuts at this time.
- Install the alternator drive belt to the engine.
- Stretch the alternator belt tight, and then tighten the fan nuts to 16 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
- Adjust the drive belt for the alternator.
- Install the fan shrouds.
- Install and adjust the power steering drive belt.
- Install the oil dipstick guide with the bolt.
- Connect the upper hose to the radiator.
- If removed, attach the air pipe.
- If equipped with 4WD, install the front differential and halfshaft assembly.
- Install the engine undercover.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Fill the cooling system and engine oil.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Start the engine and check for leaks.
- Recheck and top off all fluid levels.
- Adjust ignition timing. Road test the vehicle for proper operation.
- Remove the engine.
- Remove the timing belt.
- Remove the crankshaft pulley.
- Remove the crankshaft position sensor.
- Remove the oil cooler.
- Remove the lower oil pan.
- Remove the oil strainer.
- Remove the baffle plate.
- Remove the upper oil pan.
- Remove the 8 bolts and, prying at the positions shown, pry off the oil pump.
- Remove the O-ring from the block.
- Remove the timing belt cover seal.
To install:
- Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the pump and block.
- Install a new front cover seal.
- Install a new O-ring on the block.
- Apply new formed-in-place silicone gasket material to the oil pump, as shown. The pump must be installed within 5 minutes of sealer application.
- Install the bolts. Torque the bolts evenly and in several passes, to:
Bolts with 6mm and 12mm heads: 11 ft. lbs. (16 Nm)Bolts with 14mm heads: 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm) - The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
Toyota specifies that the engine must be removed from the vehicle to service the oil pump. The oil pan and strainer should also be removed and cleaned at the same time.
- Remove the engine from the vehicle.
- Mount the engine to a suitable engine stand.
- Remove the timing belt.
- Remove both timing belt idler pulleys.
- Remove the crankshaft timing belt pulley.
- Remove the crankshaft position sensor.
- Remove the bolt holding the oil dipstick to the left side cylinder head and pull out the dipstick tube from the oil pan.
- Remove the oil filer, oil cooler and filter bracket assembly noting the following:
- Detach the oil pressure switch connector.
- Disconnect the oil cooler hose from the oil cooler.
- Remove the bolts and nut, then separate the oil filter, oil cooler and filter bracket assembly from the front of the engine block.
- Remove the upper and lower oil pans using the procedures found in this section.
- There are five different sizes of oil pump bolts. Correctly identify each bolt, its length and location.
NOTEIt is good practice to punch holes in a piece of corrugated cardboard to closely resemble the bolt pattern of the oil pump. Insert the bolts in the cardboard in their corresponding locations as they are removed. - Remove the eight bolts from oil pump and separate the pump from the engine block. Use care not to damage the sealing surfaces of the block or the pump. Discard the gasket.
To install:
- Clean all parts well. It is recommended that the oil strainer be removed and cleaned.
- Install the strainer with a new gasket and torque the fasteners to 66 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm).
- The oil pump houses the front crankshaft seal. There are two methods of seal replacement.
- If the pump has been removed from the engine, simply pry out the old seal. Install a replacement using a seal driver or other suitable tool and tap in the new seal until surface is flush with the oil pump body edge.
- If the oil pump is still on the engine, use a sharp knife to cut the oil seal lip. Insert a suitable prytool and pry out the seal. Use great care not to damage the crankshaft surface. Put tape over the removal tool to protect the crankshaft. Apply grease to the seal lip. Using a seal driver or other suitable tool and tap in the new seal until surface is flush with the oil pump body edge.
- If the pump was disassembled, install the drive and driver rotors into the pump body with the identification marks on the rotors facing the cover side (not the pump body side). Install the cover and tighten the ten screws to 84 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
- The relief valve, if removed, should be cleaned. Coat the valve with engine oil and check that it falls smoothly into its bore by its own weight. If not, the valve and/or the pump body may have to be replaced. Install the relief valve, spring and retainer into the oil pump body bore. Use snapring pliers to install the retaining ring.
- There is a small O-ring in the engine block above the crankshaft that must be replaced with a new O-ring. Examine the pump the spline teeth of the oil pump drive gear must align with the large teeth on the crankshaft. Position the pump drive gear, as required, so the pump will slide onto the crankshaft at assembly.
- Make sure all old FIPG sealer is removed. The pump sealing flanges and the engine block sealing surfaces must be clean of all oil and grease or the new FIPG sealer wont work. Apply a 1 / 8 inch (3mm) bead of FIPG sealer to the oil pump sealing surface. Most sealers start to skin over in about three minutes so assemble the oil pump to the block without hesitation. Install the bolts just a few turns, making sure all bolt holes line up. Uniformly torque the bolts in several passes as follows:
- Tighten all bolts with a 14mm head to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
- Tighten all other bolts 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
- Install the oil pan components using the procedures found in this section.
- Install the oil filter, oil cooler and filter bracket assembly. Torque the nuts and bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm). Connect the oil cooler hose and attach the oil pressure switch connector.
- Using a new O-ring, install the oil dipstick tube.
- Install both timing belt idler pulleys.
- Install the timing belt.
- Install the engine in the vehicle. Refill with oil and coolant. Start the engine and verify correct oil pressure.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
