Rear Main Seal
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Procedure is mentioned below:----
3.6L Engine
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Remove the transaxle.
- Remove the engine flywheel bolts and discard.
- Remove the engine flywheel from the crankshaft.
- Remove the oil pan.
- Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal housing bolts.
- Using the pry points located at the edge of the crankshaft rear oil seal housing shear the RTV sealant.
- Remove and discard the crankshaft rear oil seal housing.
To install:
- Install the 6mm (0.236 in.) guides from kit EN 46109 into the 2 crankshaft rear oil seal housing corner bolt holes of the engine block.
- Install seal tools EN-47839 with the J-42183 (1, 2) onto the rear of the crankshaft flange.
- Place a 3mm (0.118 in.) bead of RTV sealant, GM P/N 12378521 (Canadian P/N 88901148) or equivalent, to the NEW crankshaft rear oil seal housing as shown (1).
NOTEDO NOT allow any engine oil on the area where the crankshaft rear oil seal housing is to be installed. - Install the crankshaft rear oil seal housing to the engine block.
- Remove the guides from the engine block.
- Install the crankshaft rear oil seal housing bolts. Tighten the crankshaft rear oil seal housing bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
- Remove the seal tool from the crankshaft flange.
- Install the oil pan.
- Place the engine flywheel in position on the crankshaft.
- Install 2 NEW bolts in location at the top and bottom of the engine flywheel bolt pattern allowing the engine flywheel to hang in position.
- Install the remaining NEW engine flywheel bolts.
Tighten the NEW engine flywheel bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)Tighten the NEW engine flywheel bolts an additional 45° - Install the transaxle.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
WARNINGDo not damage or scratch the sealing surface of the crankshaft or the seal bore.
Transaxle assemblyFlexplate from the crankshaftRear main seal from engine block by inserting a small flat-bladed prytool through the dust lip at an angle, then pry out the crankshaft rear oil seal. Repeat as necessary around the seal until it is removed.
To install:
- Lubricate new rear main with clean engine oil prior to installation.
- Slide the oil seal on the mandrel of seal installer tool J-38196 until the back of the seal is seated squarely against the collar of the tool.
- Attach the seal installer to the rear of the crankshaft with the 2 mounting bolts, then turn the T-handle until the oil seal is fully seated into the rear of the engine.
- Loosen the T-handle of the tool completely.
- Remove both bolts and the tool.
- Install or connect the following:
Flexplate. Torque the bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm), plus an additional 50°.Transaxle
